Part of the ceiling of the 18th-century Church of São Francisco de Assis, known as the 'golden church,' collapsed in the Historic Center of Salvador, Brazil, on Wednesday afternoon. The incident resulted in the death of at least one person, identified as a 23-year-old tourist from São Paulo, and injured six others. The church, renowned for its gold-covered interior, is recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The collapse occurred in an area where worshippers typically gather during masses, and the space was covered with debris, including wood from the roof. The Salvador Civil Defense and the Bahia Military Fire Department responded to the scene, with the latter confirming the casualty and attending to the injured. The church had been facing structural issues since 2023, with previous reports highlighting worn-out paintings, ceilings, and uneven floors. A friar had warned the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) about a ceiling problem just two days before the collapse, but there is no record of a response from Iphan.
