One person was killed and another suffered severe burns in a massive fire that broke out inside a slum in India's national capital territory Delhi, officials said Saturday.

The fire broke out on Friday night near the Rithala metro station in the Rohini area of the city.

According to Delhi Fire Services' officials, around 500 shanties were gutted and razed to the ground in the fire. It took several hours for the firefighters to contain the fire.

Television images showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the area even as firefighters tried to sprinkle water, and locals scrambled to save their belongings and move to safer places.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
